Brrrrrrrr!!!!

I totally thought I was ready for the cold here. I was getting tired of the heat without AC and last winter wasn't too bad, so I figured all I needed to do was get out my winter clothes and buy some snow boots. Boy was I wrong! Whereas our last apartment didn't need to be heated unless it was below about 35 F outside, this apartment seems to be eactly the same temperature as the outside air. Another problem is that we are significantly poorer this year due to the loss of 3/5 of our income, so I'm not sure how much heat we can really afford. Right now I am sitting on the sofa was a heater pointed at me with a stocking cap on. I had to sleep last night with a stocking cap because my ears were cold. Being poot is not all that fun.
We also have a flea problem. We gave the cats a flea bath, but we haven't sprayed or fogged yet, so the fleas are sticking around for now. Sage has started picking them up with duct tape. I find pieces of tape all over the house with dead fleas stuck to it. It's really quite funny. Gross, but funny!
Tomorrow is my registration day for the Spring semester. My advisor quickly put to rest the plans I had to just take a couple of classes and get a job. Oh well, at least I'll only have one lab. Right now I spend 12 hrs a week in lab. Yuck! The med school advisor set up a shadowing opportunity for me with a pediatrician. I can't wait. Unfortunately I have class every day and Sage takes the car to New Haven, so it might be a while. I hope I can shadow a surgeon soon too! It would be so sweet if I could actually go in the OR and watch. I want to cut people open now! That makes me think of Laura and her road rage. "I'm going to cut you!!!" Man, I miss Laura's funny road rage. Sage is such a calm and uninteresting driver.

Anyway, I have some lab reports to write, so that is all.

One eyed kitten!

This has to be one of the cutest things I've ever seen!

It made me cry. I really want to give it a good home, but Sage wants a "cuter" kitten. What a meanie.

Randomness

I was supposed to have my first piano lesson monday, but I got lost. =( I don't know what happened. Maybe I'm turning into Sage. The last few times we were driving somewhere unfamiliar, he knew where we were and I was all turned around. How weird. The map I looked at before I left pointed me to the complete opposite side of campus. By the time I figured out where it was, there were only 10 minutes left so I just went home. On the bright side, I'm pretty sure I know where it is now, so I ought to make it next time.

I saw a flyer for a new Kung Fu school near here the other day and I was so excited! I've been looking for a Kung Fu place around here since we moved, but they are generally rather hard to come by. I didn't have a pen to write with at the time so I figured I'd just look it up on line when I got home, but I couldn't find it. I had Sage go by there store with the flyer today but they had taken it down! Ahhh! Granted the flyer was about an offer to try the class for free last week so it makes sense that they took it down, but I hope they put another one up or something. I really miss kung fu! I took out my chain whip the other day and tried to do some moves but I couldn't remember how. I found another place closer to Hartford which might work better in the long run, but with gas prices being as they are, I'm not sure we can really afford it.

Storrs is such a cool place to live. The other day when I went to do laundry there was a deer standing on the side of the road. We drove right by it and it didn't even flinch. I've never lived anywhere with actual wildlife before. It's so neat!

Class

Right now, Sage is cutting at his foot with a kitchen knife. I'm not quite sure why, but he better be sterilizing that thing when he's done!

Today I spent 8 hours in lab. Ick! I thought part of the great thing about not being in grad school was not doing lab work, but clearly I was wrong. At least I feel like I have some clue what I am doing now, which is always nice. My classes have been decent so far, though I'm still a little bitter about having to take Chem. 2 ... such a waste of time. The other classes I'm taking this semester are Biochem, Animal Physiology, and Organic Chem Lab. I am so annoyed with my organic TA right now! He said we are not allowed to type our lab write ups but the teacher said to type them. When I asked about this discrepancy the TA said that he wants them hand written because when he lets people type them they cheat. What happened to just failing cheaters? Plus, is it really that much harder to cheat when writing? Well, yes, it probably take a bit more effort, but it is also harder to detect when the pages don't actually look identical. It seems like it would be better if we typed them so at least it would be obvious who the cheaters were. Seriously, how can I be expected to form a coherent thought without out a keyboard? We can't even use pencil, so I basically have to type my report and then rewrite it in pen. And my handwriting looks so much prettier in pencil =(. Argh!!

At least Florida State beating Miami made my week. Up until this year I had no particular affinity for FSU except for my deep appreciation of the fact that they are not Miami. But now Laura goes there and I say if OU is going to suck and lose to TCU this year, then at least my ex-roomie can have herself a good time. I'm a bit jealous that she gets to go to a school with a good football team. I really miss games in the fall when the air is nice and crisp and the trees are changing colors. Of course I could still do that here, but the ambiance would be ruined but the constant sucking. Over the last few years I've also developed an appreciation for basketball, so this will be a great place to be once that season starts. I can't wait! Go Huskies!

My piano lessons start on Monday! Yay!

I'm off to read biochem/sleep.

First entry ever! Yay!

I saw today that Sage had started posting stuff about his bonzai plant on my blog so I decided to post an entry before he completely took over. This is my first blog entry ever and I've never really kept a journal, so I feel a bit silly writing this but hopefully it will get easier over time. As Sage mentioned in his blog, we finished moving everything in and cleaned the apartment but the maintenance people are taking their sweet time fixing problems like keys not matching the locks. Sage thinks I'm paranoid because I want to keep everything locked when we aren't home. This should be a safe area, but there seems to be a lot more crime in Connecticut than there was in the South. Driving around the last few days in the beautiful countryside I decided that I really like living in CT, but I may change my mind about that the next time I spend half an hour digging the car out of the snow. But still there is a natural beauty here that makes me want to spend all my time outside.
Sage and I rode our bikes up to the campus last week to see how bad the ride was and even though it was only about three miles each way it is VERY hilly, making it a pretty brutal ride in the heat.
Tonight I'm getting all my stuff together for the first day or school tomorrow. I haven't quite reached the optimal level of summer boredom that makes me glad to be back at school, but I'm still excited. No more physics! Yay!!!

I'm getting bored, so I'm going to go watch Desperate Housewives. That is all.

It looks like Faith isn't ever going to post, so I'll have to add some content. First off, the other Faith (my bonzai sampling) is getting by, barely. Tesla likes to eat plants: you can see the brown spot where she bit it the day I dug it up. On Friday, I'll move it from New Haven to the balcony here in Storrs; it will hopefully benefit from finally being in direct sunlight.
